I graduated from Shades Valley/JCIB in the class of ‘98. I was just looking through the list of faculty to see if there was still anyone there I recognized, and I saw my two favorite teachers— Dr. Anderson and Mr. Chambers. If there is any kind of award that you give to exceptional teachers, I hope that these two will each receive one.
Dr. Anderson was by far one of the toughest teachers I had in high school. Her course was challenging, and yet I always looked forward to class. She always made everything interesting and fun. She was the first teacher to really spark my interest in how the brain worked. She also was very astute at not only telling how things worked together, but why and what would happen when they didn’t. Her methods really brought the science to life for me. I found that when I started college, it was every bit as demanding as her courses had been. I really feel like she was key in my preparation for college level courses.
Mr. Chambers made a huge difference in my personal life with his Western Culture class. He sparked my interest in philosophy, the arts, and music in such a way that those things are now a part of my daily life. Until I watched Don Giovanni in his class, I had always thought opera was boring. Since then, I have been searching for a live performance of it. Because of Mr. Chambers, I now know that the “classical” music that I love is actually mostly from the Romantic era. I will never forget listening to Verdi blasting from the stereo (so much so that it interrupted the class next door.) The philosophical ideas he taught have stuck with me and I have been able to build upon them. The different artists we discussed have become inspiration for my own art.
I cannot thank these two teachers enough. They have made a lasting impression on me, and I’m sure that they have impressed other students as well. I hope that they will continue to teach and make a difference in the world—they definitely made a difference in mine.
